Both of Northumbria’s BUCS tennis teams faced tough Wednesday clashes with only one side emerging satisfied with their afternoon’s work.
The first team travelled down the coast where they faced a Hull University side who were sat just below them in the league table. It was a must-win fixture for Harry Peach and his team.
Working around a number of injuries, the first team managed to put a strong side out against their Humberside rivals. And Peach led his team of Will Gaunt, James Staniforth, Alex Boynton, Marc Rowles and Daniel Bracken to a 6–6 draw.
A strong start in the doubles - with both pairs defeating stubborn hosts - was just what Northumbria wanted.
The second of the matches developed into a three-set thriller with Boynton and Rowles pulling off a thrilling win in the third set tie-break.
Peach said: “I was happy with the eventual result. A loss would have been a disaster but the whole team played a part in taking some points away from home.”
The second team were not quite as happy with the end result. They hosted a prolific Leeds Met side that continued to show the class they have been producing all season.
With skipper Tim Andrews out, Robin Hilson filled his position with his team Jake Ramsey, Jonny Purkiss, Steven Lewis and Alex Isles.
The day started badly as Northumbria lost both of the doubles games and, unfortunately for Hilson and company, things went from bad to worse.
“None of us turned up today, “ said the stand-in skipper. “I was impressed with the way Jonny played but as for me and the rest of the team? We didn’t play as well as we could have.”
“Leeds are the strongest team we play and we didn’t expect to beat them. But a good performance would have been encouraging moving forward.”
