Commonwealth Fencers Heading For Gold

While the Delhi Commonwealth Games is hitting rocky ground with teams wondering whether to travel to India, two North East fencers are travelling to Melbourne Australia to start their preparations to take part in the Commonwealth Fencing Championships.

Like the main Commonwealth Games, the fencing Championships take place every four years.  Current Gold and Silver medallist Beth Davidson from Darlington has had to leave her swords behind and take on the greatest task of managing the England team in their quest to improve their 2ndoverall team position and take the Wilkinson Sword Nation trophy.  Helen Dack from Newcastle, studying at Northumbria University, is representing Guernsey for her second Championships of her career.

For Beth, the challenge of managing the England Team is a proud moment. However, as a result she is unable to defend her Commonwealth Veteran titles due to the rules of the competition.

The fencing starts on the 30thSeptember for 6 days.
